When it comes to communicating with people over a local area network, it wouldn't make much sense to use a complicated and expensive messenger. A more sensible solution is IP Messenger. It provides a simple messaging functionality for local networks. Besides the possibility of sending and receiving messages easily and efficiently, another advantage is that all communications are kept within your local network, so no messages will pass through any third party servers. In other words, you don't need to concern yourself about security if you exchange important information with your co-workers.

IP Messenger is absolutely free, though donations are accepted, if you wish to make one. The application works on all popular Windows platforms and it doesn't have any special requirements. You can have it up and running in under a minute, without making any complicated settings.

The application works straight out of the box and it's exceptionally easy to use. Once it is installed on everybody's computers, IP Messenger will automatically detect all contacts and add them to your list, so you can start exchanging messages with your co-workers right away.

IP Messenger works in the background, but if you want to send a message to someone, you can bring up its compact user interface through a system tray icon. The main interface doesn't display too many options, so you don't have to much time composing a message. All you have to do is select a contact, in the upper part of the window, and type your message in the larger area, below the contacts list. Additionally, you can take a quick snapshot of the screen, which is automatically attached to your message. When you are done, you can just hit the Send button and your message will be away.

The application's system tray icon will start flashing when you receive a message from someone. Simply clicking the icon will bring up the message, but you will have to click a large "Open" button first, to reveal the actual message, if the sender has ticked the "Seal" option, before sending the message. Of course, you can either dismiss the message, when you're done reading, or you can reply. A history of all sent and received messages can be found on a separate window. Additionally, the application's configurations menu has a large selection of useful options, which may interest advanced users.

Communicating with people over a local network can be the simplest thing you have ever done, thanks to IP Messenger's efficient design and functionality.

Pros

You can exchange messages with other people, over a local network, quickly and easily. There is no need to make any kind of initial configurations. The application is lightweight, easy to use and it doesn't have any impact on a computer's performance.

Cons

A more modern design for the interface would be a good thing.
